Verdict

A bold design piece with beautiful materials (stainless steel + copper base) that also brews a good strong moka, but less practical in daily use and quite expensive. Ideal if you are looking for an iconic moka pot that shines primarily as a visual statement.

The Alessi La Conica is not an ordinary moka pot, but a miniature architectural piece designed by Aldo Rossi. Its clean conical form, cylindrical lid and copper base make it a true object of attention on your hob. Behind this sculptural appearance lies a genuine stainless steel moka pot, made for those who care as much about their coffee corner as about the coffee itself.

Design & materials: stainless steel + copper, pure lines

La Conica is built from simple geometric shapes: a stainless steel cone topped with a cylindrical lid, standing on a copper base. This gives it a slender, almost architectural appearance — no accident, since Aldo Rossi was primarily an architect.

The body is high-quality 18/10 stainless steel, polished to a mirror finish, with a copper base for fast, even heat distribution. In some editions the handle and button are in pale blue thermoplastic resin, creating a striking contrast with the metal.

The premium quality is immediately apparent: the moka pot is relatively heavy for its size, the finish is meticulous and the proportions have been deliberately chosen. La Conica does not look like "just another moka pot" — it looks like a design piece that also makes coffee.

Coffee: elegant moka with a classic flavour profile

In terms of taste, La Conica delivers what you expect from a good moka pot: a strong, concentrated coffee with plenty of body, ideal as a base for cappuccino or to drink straight as a short espresso-style cup. The copper base conducts heat quickly and evenly, which can help with consistent extraction.

Important: like any classic moka pot, the taste depends heavily on the grind, water level and heat management. La Conica is not more forgiving than simpler models — if anything, it requires a bit more attention because the conical shape concentrates the heat differently than a standard octagonal base. Low heat and patience are key to getting the best out of it.

In daily use

Here La Conica is less flawless than as a design object. The conical shape means the upper chamber is relatively narrow, making it harder to clean thoroughly than a standard moka pot. The copper base can discolour over time if not dried and stored carefully after each use. The polished stainless steel shows fingerprints easily — beautiful in a photo, but requiring a little more care in daily kitchen use.

The screw mechanism is standard; the pot feels solid in the hand. For those who use it primarily on gas or electric, it works well. It is not induction-compatible without an adapter due to the copper-only base.

Who is the Alessi La Conica for?

La Conica is the right choice if:

  • you see your moka pot as a design object and a statement in your kitchen;
  • you are a fan of Aldo Rossi's architecture or Italian design culture;
  • you are prepared to invest significantly more than a standard model;
  • you are willing to give a little extra care to cleaning and maintenance.

For purely coffee-focused buyers seeking maximum value per pound spent, La Conica is not the most logical choice. But for those who treat their coffee corner as part of their home design, this is one of the most striking moka pots ever made.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Alessi La Conica induction compatible?

No. La Conica has a copper base which is not magnetic and therefore not detected by standard induction hobs. You would need a separate induction adapter disc. For a native induction Alessi, consider the 9090 instead.

How do you care for the copper base?

Dry the copper base thoroughly after every use and avoid leaving it in contact with moisture. Over time copper naturally develops a patina — some owners embrace this; others polish it back with a soft copper cleaner. Avoid abrasive sponges which scratch the finish.

Alessi La Conica vs Alessi 9090 — which is better?

The 9090 is more practical: bayonet closure, fully stainless steel, induction-compatible and easier to clean. La Conica is more visually dramatic with its Aldo Rossi architecture and copper base. For daily use the 9090 wins; for pure design impact La Conica is in a class of its own.

What sizes does La Conica come in?

La Conica is typically available in 3-cup and 6-cup versions (espresso cups of approx. 30–40 ml each). Availability can be limited as it is part of Alessi's heritage collection.
